Ultrasound 201 – All About the Uterus

Description

This 4-hour, in-person course aims to build sonographic assessment skills essential to the accurate evaluation of the uterus. Learners will be provided with the opportunity to integrate the fundamental imaging principles learned in the pre-requisite Ultrasound 101 workshop while mastering the manipulation of both the transabdominal and endovaginal transducers to locate and recognize the normal sonographic appearance of the uterine tissue within the pelvic cavity.

By the end of this course, practitioners will be able to differentiate the endometrium from myometrium when assessing the uterine tissue. Endometrial lining measurements, identification of myomas (uterine fibroids) and uterine polyps will be addressed. The ability to measure an endometrial lining is a great tool for assessing the estrogen influence on a woman’s uterus and can help to determine safe dosing of estrogen and progesterone. This course will also cover basic uterine pathology that may be considered a contraindication to IUD insertion and will be introduced along with the sonographic appearance of hormonal and copper IUDs.

The utilization of ultrasound assessment for the uterus prior to IUD placement can significantly reduce complications and help to identify any present anatomical contraindications for IUD insertion. Post-IUD insertion ultrasound is an evaluative tool to determine the location of the IUD and ensure its proper placement.

Ultrasound is a safe and effective imaging modality that uses high-frequency sound waves to assess internal organs within the body and is a highly sensitive tool that can be used for many applications in a woman’s health-focused practice.

Hands-on scanning will be the main form of instruction and will be supplemented with a theory component to bolster knowledge.
