Description

The 3.5-hour online, didactic course offers a comprehensive review of birth control options in Canada. It briefly discusses all contraceptive choices, then takes a deep dive into short-acting reversible (SARC) and long-acting reversible (LARC) options. Intrauterine devices (IUD), both copper and hormonal are reviewed in detail, as well as emergency contraception.

Course curriculum:

  • Current birth control practices in Canada and rates of unplanned pregnancies
  • Predicted versus typical contraceptive rates
  • Short-acting reversible contraceptive options; including types, mode of action, adverse reactions, and contraindications
  • Long-acting reversible contraceptive options; including types, mode of action, adverse reactions, and contraindications
  • Emergency contraception options; best practices for prescribing
  • Intrauterine devices (IUD), copper and hormonal. Compare and contrast differences and review all Health Canada approved devices
  • IUD: safety, risk factors, contraindications, and managing adverse events
  • IUD: checklist for clinic supplies and equipment needed
  • How to switch between birth control types while maintaining birth control effectiveness

This course is a prerequisite for Practical Training in IUD Insertion and Removals.
